Typically Calvin wakes up first, followed shortly by Jane and eventually by Clara. But this morning, Jane woke up first. I was already awake, still in bed, looking at my phone, when I heard the nursery door open and saw Jane step tentatively out. I gestured silently for her to come to me, and she ran up with her blanket and baby Dumbo (stuffed elephant). I picked her up and put her in bed between Jack (still mostly asleep) and me. Jack and I both turned facing her. I draped an arm over her chest, and Jack and I held hands above her head. Jane was all the way awake, but happy to quietly lie in bed with us for awhile. I half dozed but each time I looked at her she was already looking at me.
I thought about the sweet intmacy of getting to quietly cuddle with my kids, and I'm especially glad it was Jane in this case. Calvin demands lots of cuddles and is pretty upfront about his needs. Clara is just not as interested in cuddling (or sitting still). I think Jane is still young enough and has the personality to really soak up lots of cuddles, but she doesn't ask for them often. It was nice to get a chance to give her some undivided attention.
