9/21/18 - Kid Snippets

Sometimes when I walk in the nursery in the morning sleeping Jane smiles almost before she even opens her eyes. Then she sits up quickly, still disoriented, but so happy to see me.

Recently it's been cool enough to have the girls where light jackets on their way to Beth's. I showed Clara the hood on her jacket and then showed her that Dada and I both have hoods too, and she just thought that was wonderful. She lifted her shoulders up to her cheeks and smiled like it was so exciting. Jane is less impressed by her hood but stares at us curiously.

The other night I made a "tent" by draping a big blanket across the couch and over the coffee table. Clara immediately got a bunch of her stuffed animals and put them in the tent to sleep. She even laid them on their backs and then said they were sleeping. Jane crawled into the tent (more of a tunnel) and over each animal as Clara yelled "NOOOOO!" and Jane just looked at me and grinned and grinned. I think Jane grins because she's excited about the tent, but it looks like she grins at how freaked out Clara is about Jane touching the stuffed animals. The whole thing seemed hilarious to me.

Clara wanted me to see her stuffed animals sleeping in the tent.

That same evening I tried to do the Hokey Pokey with both of them. As I started singing Jane immediately started trying to turn in circles (whether we were at the "turn yourself about" part or not) and Clara kept saying "No! No singing! No hokey pokey!" which was making me laugh. Even as Clara protested she got closer and closer to us and then decided she did like the Hokey Pokey and started twirling herself about. She was holding the ultra soft pink teddy bear ("Erin" named after Erin who gave it to Jane on Erin's wedding day) and when Clara twirled the bear whiffed Jane's face, which Jane loved. So they kept doing that and that was our version of the hokey pokey.

Headbands and water play. Typical weekend.

Last night I worked late at Starbucks and got home after the kids were in bed. Jack had put them to bed nearly an hour prior but when I pulled into my parking spot Clara was standing in the window looking outside. She saw me and grinned. I wasn't sure whether to go say hi to her since that would really disrupt their bedtime routine. I tried to avoid it. But Jane was fussing pretty loudly and I hadn't seen her all day so I went in. I held Jane, who cuddled against me for a long time, obviously tired but wanting to be held. Occasionally she would pop up and look at my face and give a small smile and then rest her head on my chest again. Meanwhile I watched Clara observe her own shadows cast by the night light and just generally talk to herself. It was kind of nice to get to see what the room is like for them after bedtime. Love my girls so much.

Safe under the train.
